Industrial Piston Valves for Reliable Flow Shut-Off
Engineered piston valve solutions for dependable flow isolation, tight shut-off and stable operation across demanding industrial fluid and process applications.
Designed for Dependable Isolation & Long-Term Process Performance
Piston valves use a cylindrical piston that moves linearly within the valve body to open and close the flow passage. Their sealing arrangement is designed to provide reliable isolation of the process medium.
Piston valves are commonly considered for industrial services involving fluids such as water, oil, gas and steam, particularly where dependable shut-off and repeated opening and closing operation are important.
Built for Reliable Industrial Flow Isolation
Piston valve construction provides functional advantages for industrial systems where sealing reliability and consistent opening and closing performance are important.
Reliable Shut-Off
The piston and sealing arrangement is designed to provide dependable isolation of the process flow.
Linear Piston Movement
The valve opens and closes through controlled axial movement of the cylindrical piston inside the valve body.
Suitable for Repeated Operation
The operating principle can be well suited to applications requiring regular opening and closing cycles.
Stable Process Isolation
Designed to maintain a controlled sealing interface between the piston, sealing elements and valve body.
Automation Compatibility
Depending on the configuration, piston valves can be integrated with suitable operating or actuator arrangements.
Serviceable Sealing System
Properly designed sealing components can support inspection, servicing and replacement during the valve's operating life.
How a Piston Valve Works
A piston valve controls flow through the linear movement of a cylindrical piston. As the piston moves away from the sealing area, the flow passage opens. When it moves back into the sealing position, the flow path is isolated.
Valve Opens
The piston moves upward or away from the sealing position, creating an open passage for process flow.
Flow Passes Through
With the piston in the open position, process fluid can travel through the valve flow passage.
Piston Moves Down
During closing, the piston moves toward the sealing arrangement and progressively restricts the flow passage.
Flow Is Isolated
The piston reaches its closed position and the sealing system isolates the process flow.
Piston Valves Across Industrial Process Systems
Piston valves can be considered for applications where reliable shut-off, repeated operation and process-fluid isolation are important.
Steam Systems
Suitable for selected steam and thermal process lines where dependable flow shut-off is required.

Reliable Process Isolation
The piston provides a controlled sealing interface for dependable shut-off under suitable operating conditions.
Automation Ready
Suitable configurations can be integrated with automated process systems and compatible actuation arrangements.
How to Select the Right Piston Valve
Proper valve selection should consider the complete operating environment rather than valve size alone.
01. Process Medium
Identify the fluid being handled, including water, steam, oil, gas or other compatible process media.
02. Pressure Requirements
Confirm normal and design pressure conditions before choosing the appropriate valve construction.
03. Temperature
Evaluate operating and design temperature because sealing materials and valve construction must suit the service.
04. Flow Conditions
Consider required flow rate, line conditions and the required pressure-drop characteristics.
05. Sealing Requirements
Select the sealing arrangement according to the process medium, operating temperature and required shut-off performance.
06. Operating Method
Determine whether manual operation or an automated operating arrangement is appropriate for the installation.
Piston Valve Frequently Asked Questions
What is a piston valve?
A piston valve is an industrial valve that uses the linear movement of a cylindrical piston to open or close a fluid flow passage and provide process isolation.
Where are piston valves used?
Piston valves can be used in selected steam, water, oil, gas, thermal, power generation and industrial process applications where reliable shut-off is required.
How does a piston valve work?
The piston moves linearly inside the valve body. When it moves away from the sealing position, flow can pass through the valve. When it returns to the closed position, the flow path is isolated.
Are piston valves suitable for steam service?
Piston valves can be considered for compatible steam applications when the valve construction and sealing system are selected for the required pressure and temperature.
Can piston valves be automated?
Yes. Depending on the valve configuration and application, piston valves can be operated through suitable manual, pneumatic or other compatible actuation arrangements.
How do I select the correct piston valve?
Selection should consider process medium, pressure, temperature, flow conditions, sealing requirements, connection arrangement and operating method.
